![]() ![]() Q: "What kind of songs are we going to be learning?"Ī: I found a list of 100 commonly-called standards that I'm getting the songs from. Once I've learned it (or while I'm learning it), I'll play along to the recording to check if it sounds right. Q: "Should I learn the song by listening or by reading the sheet music?"Ī: I use both! I typically listen to the song a few times, then learn the song from the sheet. I will provide a link to the book the sheet music is in, and you might be able to find something else online, but I can't provide it for you. For bass and drums, I'd say that you definitely need to comp, but learning the melody and the solo can only help you.Ī: I talked with the mods about this, seeing as how it's for an educational purpose, but it's still pretty morally/legally grey. I'll leave it to your discretion: you decide what "learning the song" means to you. I think that learning the melody, soloing, and comping the chords are all important for you, because you might be called to do any of them on a gig. What do I need to do for this challenge?"Ī: For guitar and piano, this is tricky. ![]() Learning to solo over the form will show that you have internalized the sound and feel of the song much more than just the head would. Q: "Do I need to play the melody and a solo?"Ī: That's up to you! I would say that for most instruments, learning the melody is a great first step, but jazz is based on improvisation. Who did the most interesting version of the song? What do you like about a specific recording? Which solo did you find the most engaging, and why? There's a lot for a non-musician to talk about and ask questions about. It was first recorded by João Gilberto in 1960 for his album O Amor, o Sorriso e a Flor.Ī: Well, maybe this will encourage you to try! But even if you don't play an instrument, you can still talk about the song. ![]() The English lyrics were written by Jobim. Standard of the Week 1/29: Samba de Uma Nota So/One Note SambaĪccording to Wikipedia, "Samba de Uma Nota Só" ("One Note Samba") is a bossa nova song composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim with Portuguese lyrics by Newton Mendonça. Musicians are encouraged to upload recordings of their progress with last week's standard in the comments below. Give the musicians on the sub the opportunity to learn new songs with their peers and share their learning experiences with each other This series is meant to do the following:Ĭhoose an interesting and important jazz tune each weekĭiscuss our thoughts on the song, different interpretations of the song, and the artists associated with that tune I wanted to share this journey with you and invite you to participate, as well! One of my resolutions for this year as a mediocre-at-best jazz player is to learn one new standard a week on average, with at least 50 tunes being under my belt by the end of the year. I think that I'll let this song run for the next full week as well, just because I've missed over half of this week. NOTE: Sorry this is so late! I've had a busy week at work and just haven't had a chance to prepare a post for this week until today. ![]()
